Yes, Costa da Caparica is one of the best surf destinations in Europe. It offers over 30km of beach break waves, consistent year-round swell, sandy bottom spots for safe learning, and more powerful sections for experienced surfers.
What is the best time of year to surf in Caparica?
September to May brings the most consistent and powerful swells. Summer is calmer, ideal for beginners and families. The water is warmest from July to October and coldest from January to March.
What are the best surf spots in Costa da Caparica?
Praia do CDS is the best spot for beginners and intermediates, consistent, safe, with a sandy bottom. Praia da Rainha offers punchy peaks for intermediate surfers. Fonte da Telha comes alive on solid winter swells for advanced surfers. Cova do Vapor is a heavy wedge at the river mouth, a favorite among bodyboarders.
What wetsuit do I need in Caparica?
In summer (June–September) a 3/2mm full suit works fine. In autumn and winter (October–April) use a 4/3mm or 5/4mm depending on conditions. Water temperatures range from 13°C in winter to 22°C in late summer.
Can complete beginners surf in Costa da Caparica?
Absolutely. CDS Beach at Costa da Caparica is one of the safest and most beginner-friendly beaches in Portugal, mellow waves, sandy bottom and lifeguards on duty. Dr. Bernard has been teaching first-timers since 1994.
How do I get to Costa da Caparica from Lisbon?
Costa da Caparica is just 20–30 minutes from Lisbon by car via A2. Direct buses also run from central Lisbon (lines 3710, 3709, 3708, 3022) with stops close to the beach.
Is there parking in Costa da Caparica?
Yes. There is free and paid parking available in various areas near the beach and surf school. During summer weekends it gets busy, arriving early is recommended.
Can I rent a surfboard and a wetsuit in Caparica?
Yes. Dr. Bernard offers surf equipment rental: boards and wetsuits, directly at the surf school on CDS Beach. You can also book surf lessons with all equipment included.
Where should I stay in Costa da Caparica?
Villa Caparica is Dr. Bernard's beachside hostel, just 1 minute from the surf school and 2 minutes from the ocean. It offers private and shared rooms and is perfect for surf camps and extended surf holidays.
Where can I eat after surfing in Caparica?
Dr. Bernard Restaurant is right on the beachfront: fresh food, homemade pizzas, gourmet burgers and signature cocktails. Open daily with ocean views and DJ nights on weekends.
